THE ARMORY SHOW: JULIA KUNIN & KATARZYNA PRZEZWAŃSKA
Seven Sisters is proud to present a dual exhibition in its first Armory Presents series, featuring sculptural works by Julia Kunin and Katarzyna Przezwańska. This pairing of two female artists, both actively making work in Eastern Europe, explores the intersection of organic form, architectural structure, and material transformation.
Julia Kunin’s ceramic sculptures merge the human figure with architectural motifs, drawing inspiration from ancient caryatids, Bauhaus aesthetics, and Art Nouveau. Her iridescent luster glazes, developed during her time in Hungary, imbue her works with a psychedelic sheen, creating totemic forms that oscillate between abstraction and figuration. These pieces serve as sentinels of a speculative future, reflecting on gender, lesbian identity, and the body’s relationship to space.
Katarzyna Przezwańska’s practice integrates natural materials—such as rocks, minerals, and plants—into sculptural forms that echo geological and vegetative processes. Her works often resemble hybrid entities, blurring the lines between the organic and the artificial, and challenging traditional definitions of nature. By manipulating these materials, Przezwańska creates installations that comment on the interplay between human-made environments and the natural world.
Together, Kunin and Przezwańska offer a compelling dialogue on the convergence of natural and constructed forms, inviting viewers to reconsider the boundaries between the organic and the architectural, between empowered symbols of the feminine and the body itself, and between playful imagination and physical presence. This exhibition underscores the transformative power of sculpture to reimagine our relationship with the material world.
